Weymouth is a town in Dorset, England, on the southern coast of Weymouth Bay and 8 kilometres (5 mi) north of the Isle of Portland. The town centre is at Weymouth Harbour. The town is served by Weymouth railway station.
The local area around Weymouth has been occupied since the Mesolithic period, and there are a number of archaeological sites in the vicinity, including those at Little Woodbury and Radipole.
In the 1st century, the Romans built a maritime base here, which they named Portus Adurni (the modern-day harbour). During their occupation, the Romans built a bathhouse near to present-day Weymouth High Street. In 597 AD, the Saxons invaders arrived and killed the Roman commander, leaving the town in darkness for centuries.
The town was not recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, but it is thought that it may have been included under the entry for Melcombe Regis. It first appears on record as Wymouth in a charter dated 1033, making it one of the oldest towns in Britain. Shortly afterwards, Weymouth was given its first charter as a borough.
In 1086, William the Conqueror ordered that a castle be built here to protect Portland Harbour. The castle cost £19 19s 11d, and was completed by his son William Rufus in 1088. The castle was besieged by King Stephen in 1138 during the Anarchy, and again in 1153 by his rival Henry of Anjou. The castle was captured by the French in 1214 and destroyed by them in 1217.
The town became a royal borough in 1571, and was made a county town in 1635. The town’s defences were improved in the 18th century with the construction of a series of fortifications known as thePalmerston Forts.
During the First World War, Weymouth was used as a staging post for troops departing to France, and more than 70% of the town’s buildings were commandeered for military use. In 1917, an airfield was established at Weymouth (now Portland International Airport), which was used as a training ground for the Royal Flying Corps and later the Royal Air Force.
The town was badly damaged by German bombing during the Second World War, with more than 1,000 bombs falling on Weymouth and Portland between 1940 and 1945.
Following the war, Weymouth’s economy declined as the town became increasingly reliant on holidaymakers for its income. However, since the late 1990s, the town has undergone something of a regeneration, with new shopping and leisure facilities being built, and old buildings being restored.
