When Italian expats living in the United Kingdom miss Italian food, they often head to their local Italian supermarket. Italian grocers usually provide Italian-English staples such as pasta and olive oil, but also more traditional Italian items like fresh fish and produce.
Due to the large Italian immigrant population near me, many Italian supermarkets exist in my city and surrounding areas. Since moving here six months ago, I’ve been visiting them regularly. They’re not only great for ingredients like tomatoes and pizza dough; they also sell packaged foods of all sorts: dried pastas, cured meats, amoretti cookies, you name it!
The first Italian market I visited was one about fifteen minutes away from my house by car (I live in London). It had a larger selection of Italian products than I had expected, and some even cheaper prices. I was surprised that there were actually more Italian-English staples in Italian supermarkets, such as Kraft Parmesan cheese or Barilla pasta.
Italian supermarket near me: store locator
Don’t forget that you can buy your Italian food groceries online and have them delivered to your house if there isn’t any supermarkets close to where you live.
You may also want to check out any general supermarket near me open now.
The Italian grocers where I live usually have a large staff on the weekends, so it’s easier to ask for things in Italian if you don’t speak English fluently yet. Italian stores also sell typical Italian clothing items, Fiat cars, and items like Gucci bags (which are great for presents), and Italian music CDs (the hit song “Almeno Tu Nell’Universo” by Lucio Dalla is always playing).
Italian food brands available at Italian supermarkets are generally more expensive, but they are also of higher quality. For example, the cold cuts are Slaney or Parma ham, the balsamic vinegar is made in Modena, and the extra virgin olive oil is from Sicily.
Italian supermarkets often carry specialty items that you can’t find at your local supermarket. If you’re craving a little piece of Italy and want to cook an Italian dish tonight, don’t be afraid to check out your local Italian market!
