Aldi is the most popular UK supermarket for Christmas food, according to a new survey.

The German discounter came out on top in a poll of 2,000 shoppers by consumer group Which?, with 62% saying they would buy their Christmas food from Aldi this year.

This is the first time Aldi has topped the annual Christmas food poll, which has been running for eight years.

It is also the first time that any supermarket has won the accolade more than once – Tesco held the title for six years in a row before being pipped to the post by Sainsbury’s last year.

But Aldi has now regained its crown, with shoppers praising its “great quality” food and “amazing prices”.

Another German supermarket, Lidl, was also praised by shoppers, coming in second place with 61% of the vote.

Tesco came in third place with 60%, followed by Sainsbury’s (59%), Morrisons (57%) and Asda (56%).

The poll also found that three quarters of shoppers will be buying their Christmas food from supermarkets this year, up from 70% last year.

Just 9% said they would be buying their food from local shops or markets, while 6% said they would be ordering online.

When it comes to Christmas dinner, roast turkey is still the nation’s favourite, with 62% of shoppers saying they will be having it on 25 December.

This is followed by roast beef (34%), gammon (24%), chicken (23%) and goose (9%).

When it comes to veggie options, nut roast is the most popular choice (19%), followed by vegetarian sausage rolls (16%), quorn pie (9%) and tofu turkey (4%).

As for dessert, Christmas pudding is still the nation’s favourite, with 43% of shoppers saying they will be having it on 25 December.

This is followed by mince pies (42%),Christmas cake (37%), yule log (26%) and trifle (24%).

When it comes to Christmas drinks, the poll found that wine is still the nation’s favourite, with 61% of shoppers saying they will be having it on 25 December.

This is followed by prosecco (34%), beer (32%), whisky (17%) and vodka (16%).
